Traditional Chinese Medicine

Healing from the inside out

A complete system of care developed over three thousand years. Custom herbal formulas, moxibustion, Gua Sha, and nutritional guidance work together with acupuncture to treat the root of your condition, not just the symptoms you feel today.

Four Modalities

A complete system, tailored to you

Traditional Chinese Medicine is not one thing. It is a system of complementary therapies, each with a specific role. At Shanghai Acupuncture Clinic, we draw from four core modalities and combine them based on what your body needs.

01

Herbal Medicine

Zhong Yao · Chinese Herbs

Custom formulas built from the Chinese materia medica to address your specific pattern of imbalance. Taken as teas, granules, or pills between visits to extend and deepen your healing.

Taken at home · Daily support
02

Moxibustion

Ai Jiu · Gentle Heat Therapy

Gentle, warming heat from burning mugwort applied near specific acu-points. Used for conditions involving cold, dampness, or stagnation, and especially effective for digestive, reproductive, and joint issues.

In-session · Warming therapy
03

Gua Sha

Scraping Therapy

Smooth-edged tool strokes applied along the meridians to release muscle tension, improve circulation, and move stagnation. A powerful adjunct for pain, stiffness, tension headaches, and respiratory conditions.

In-session · Releases tension
04

Nutritional Guidance

Shi Liao · Food Therapy

In Chinese medicine, food is medicine. We offer guidance on which foods support your specific constitution and condition, which to minimize, and how to eat in a way that strengthens rather than depletes.

At home · Long-term foundation
What Is TCM

A philosophy of medicine, not just a collection of treatments

Traditional Chinese Medicine is one of the oldest continuously practiced medical systems in the world. Refined and documented over more than three thousand years, it is built on a fundamentally different premise than Western medicine: instead of isolating a single cause and treating it, TCM reads the whole system and restores its balance.

What Western medicine calls a headache, digestive issue, or chronic fatigue, TCM reads as a signal. The body is telling you that something deeper is out of alignment. The symptom is the outer expression. The work of TCM is to find and resolve the inner pattern.

"Western medicine treats the disease. Chinese medicine treats the person who has the disease."

Pattern over diagnosis

We read your whole system, pulse, tongue, constitution, and symptoms, to identify the underlying pattern causing your condition.

Work with the body, not against it

We support the body's own healing intelligence. No medications that override your natural systems. No side effects competing with benefits.

Personalized, not protocol-driven

Two patients with the same Western diagnosis may receive very different Chinese medicine treatments, because the patterns behind the condition are different.

Benefits

What TCM can do for you

TCM complements acupuncture and extends its effects between visits. It is especially valuable for chronic conditions, long-term healing, and constitutional support where weekly treatments alone are not enough.

Root-Cause Healing

Addresses the underlying imbalance, not just the symptoms you feel today.

Between-Visit Support

Herbs and guidance keep the healing process moving even when you are not in clinic.

Better Sleep

Herbal formulas and food therapy that calm the nervous system and restore natural rhythms.

Hormonal Balance

TCM has a long track record with fertility, menstrual health, menopause, and thyroid support.

Digestive Strength

Rebuilds a strong, resilient digestive system, the foundation of long-term health in TCM.

Steady Energy

Addresses the exhaustion beneath the fatigue instead of masking it with stimulants.

Stronger Immunity

Builds protective Qi so you recover faster, get sick less often, and respond better to seasonal change.

Emotional Balance

Addresses anxiety, stress, and overthinking through herbs and food, not just talk therapy.

The Herbal Process

How we build your formula

Every herbal formula we prescribe is individualized. Unlike off-the-shelf supplements, Chinese herbal medicine is designed for your specific pattern, adjusted as you heal, and never one-size-fits-all.

Diagnosis

We take your full history, feel your pulse, examine your tongue, and identify the pattern at the root of your condition.

Formula Design

We build a formula from the Chinese materia medica, combining herbs that work together to address your specific pattern.

Dispensing

Your formula is provided as granules, pills, or raw herbs to prepare at home, with clear instructions for use.

Ongoing Adjustment

As you heal and your pattern shifts, we adjust your formula. This is not a static prescription, it evolves with you.

Safety & Sourcing

Natural does not mean anything goes. We take this seriously.

Chinese herbal medicine is extremely safe when prescribed by a trained practitioner. But herbs are real medicine with real effects. That is why we screen for interactions with your medications, source only from trusted pharmacies, and adjust formulas as your body changes. Here is how we keep you safe.

  • We screen for medication interactionsAlways tell us every prescription, over-the-counter medication, and supplement you take. We cross-check every herb in your formula against your medication list before prescribing.
  • Trusted pharmacies onlyOur herbs come from established Chinese pharmacies that test for heavy metals, pesticides, contamination, and correct species identification. No random online sources.
  • Formulas, not single herbsChinese medicine rarely uses a single herb. Formulas combine multiple herbs that balance each other, reducing risk and amplifying benefit.
  • We work with your primary careTCM complements conventional medicine, it does not replace it. We are happy to coordinate with your doctor and never ask you to stop medications on your own.

TCM FAQ

Common questions, honest answers

The questions patients ask most about Chinese medicine, herbs, and safety. If you have one we have not answered, call us or book a free consultation.

Still have questions?
(404) 728-8896
Can I take Chinese herbs with my medications?
In most cases, yes, but only after we review your medication list. Chinese herbs can interact with blood thinners, antidepressants, blood pressure medications, and immunosuppressants. Always tell us every prescription, over-the-counter medication, and supplement you take. We cross-check every herb before prescribing, and we coordinate with your primary care doctor when needed.
Are Chinese herbs safe?
When prescribed by a licensed practitioner and sourced from reputable pharmacies, yes. Chinese herbs have been used safely for thousands of years. The risk comes from self-prescribing, buying from questionable online sources, or taking single herbs in high doses. Our formulas combine multiple herbs that balance each other, use tested pharmacies that screen for heavy metals and contamination, and are tailored to your specific condition.
How do I take Chinese herbs?
Herbs are typically prescribed as granules, pills, or raw herbs. Granules dissolve in hot water to make a quick tea, pills are taken like supplements, and raw herbs require cooking into a decoction. Your practitioner will explain exactly how to prepare and take your formula and answer any questions.
Do the herbs taste bad?
Honestly, sometimes yes. Chinese herbal teas can taste bitter, earthy, or unusual to Western palates. This is not a flaw, many of the therapeutic properties come from exactly those flavors. That said, if taste is a real barrier for you, we can prescribe pill or granule forms that are much easier to take.
What is moxibustion and does it burn?
Moxibustion is the burning of dried mugwort near specific acu-points to deliver gentle warmth. It does not touch your skin and it does not burn you. You feel a pleasant, deep warming sensation. Moxibustion is especially effective for conditions involving cold, damp, or stagnation, and for digestive, reproductive, and joint concerns.
What is Gua Sha? Will it leave marks?
Gua Sha uses a smooth-edged tool to apply strokes along the meridians. Yes, it can leave temporary reddish or purplish marks similar to cupping marks, called sha. These fade within a few days and represent the release of stagnation. If you have an event or photo shoot, tell us and we will use lighter pressure or avoid visible areas.
How long will I need to take herbs?
It depends on your condition. Acute issues may resolve in a few weeks. Chronic conditions often require a few months of consistent use. Constitutional support may involve seasonal adjustment rather than a defined end. We assess your progress regularly and adjust your formula as you heal. The goal is always to use herbs until they are no longer needed.
Is TCM covered by insurance?
Acupuncture and related TCM treatments are covered by select insurance carriers. Herbal formulas themselves are rarely covered but can often be paid for with HSA or FSA cards. We offer free insurance benefit verification before your first visit so you know exactly what is covered and what to expect.

When medications were not the answer

Real stories from patients who added Chinese medicine to their care. Often what finally resolved a long-running issue was a combination of acupuncture, herbs, and food, not any one thing alone.
