What Is Acupuncture

A gentle practice, refined over thousands of years

Acupuncture is one of the oldest continuously practiced forms of medicine in the world. Developed in China over two thousand years ago, it is still used today by millions of people worldwide and is widely studied by modern medical research.

The goal is simple: restore your body's natural balance. When energy, circulation, and nervous system signals flow properly, the body can heal itself. When they do not, pain, inflammation, and illness take hold. Acupuncture gently corrects these imbalances without drugs, without surgery, and without side effects for the vast majority of patients.

"Acupuncture does not fight your body. It works with it, reminding it how to heal itself."

Specific points

Your body has hundreds of mapped acupuncture points along pathways called meridians. Each point connects to specific organs, functions, and areas.

Hair-thin needles

The needles are about the diameter of a single human hair. Most patients feel almost nothing on insertion. Each needle is sterile, single-use, and FDA approved.

Your body responds

The needles trigger nerve, muscle, and connective tissue responses. Your body releases natural painkillers, reduces inflammation, and starts the healing process.

Safety & Comfort

Afraid of needles? Most of our patients are. That is okay.

Acupuncture needles are nothing like the hollow needles used for shots or blood draws. They are solid, flexible, and about as thick as a single strand of hair. Most patients feel very little at all, and many fall asleep during treatment.

  • Hair-thin and flexibleYou can fit about 40 acupuncture needles inside one hollow injection needle. They are solid, not hollow, so they slide in smoothly.
  • Sterile and single-useEvery needle comes sealed from the manufacturer and is disposed of immediately after your session. There is zero risk of cross-contamination.
  • Side effects are rareWhen performed by a licensed practitioner, acupuncture has one of the lowest side-effect profiles of any medical treatment. The most common effect reported is feeling deeply relaxed.
  • We go at your paceIf you are anxious, tell us. We can start with fewer needles, thinner needles, or just a few points and build from there as you get comfortable.

Does acupuncture really work?
Yes, for many conditions. Acupuncture has been used for thousands of years and is now supported by a growing body of modern clinical research. Organizations including the World Health Organization and the National Institutes of Health recognize acupuncture as effective for a range of pain, digestive, neurological, and women's health concerns. Your results depend on your specific condition, how long you have had it, and how consistent you are with your treatment plan.
Does acupuncture hurt?
Most patients feel very little. Acupuncture needles are about the diameter of a human hair, nothing like the needles used for shots or blood draws. You may feel a brief tap on insertion, a mild tingling, or a warm heaviness around the point. None of these are painful. In fact, most patients find acupuncture so relaxing that they fall asleep during treatment.
How many sessions will I need?
It depends on your condition and goals. Some patients feel meaningful relief after one or two sessions. Chronic conditions typically take a course of six to twelve sessions, usually scheduled once or twice a week at first and then tapered as you improve. We discuss this clearly during your free consultation so you know what to expect.
How soon will I feel results?
It varies. Some patients notice relief the same day. Others feel cumulative benefits over several sessions. For chronic issues, give it at least three to four sessions before evaluating. Sleep, mood, energy, and digestion often improve earlier than the main symptom you came in for.
Are the needles safe?
Absolutely. We use only sterile, single-use, FDA-approved needles. Every needle comes sealed from the manufacturer and is disposed of immediately after your session. Acupuncture performed by a licensed practitioner is one of the safest forms of medical treatment available, with a very low rate of side effects.
Can I drive home after a session?
Yes. Acupuncture does not use drugs or sedation. Most patients feel relaxed and alert after a session. Some feel a bit sleepy and deeply calm, so we recommend taking it easy and hydrating well for the rest of the day.
What if I am afraid of needles?
Most of our patients were nervous their first time. Tell us. We can start with fewer needles, use our thinnest ones, or work on just a few points and build from there. Many patients who were terrified of needles end up looking forward to their sessions because of how relaxing they are.
Is acupuncture covered by insurance?
More insurance carriers now cover acupuncture than ever before. We are in-network with select carriers and provide Superbills for out-of-network reimbursement. HSA and FSA cards are accepted, and we offer free insurance benefit verification before your first visit so you know exactly what is covered.
