Cupping Therapy

Ancient therapy, visible results

Suction cups gently lift the skin and muscle to release deep-seated tension, improve circulation, and accelerate your body's healing. One of the oldest therapies in Chinese medicine, practiced for thousands of years and popular today with athletes, performers, and anyone carrying chronic tension.

What Is Cupping

A reverse massage that reaches deeper than hands can

Cupping is one of the oldest therapies in traditional Chinese medicine, with records of its use going back more than three thousand years. The concept is simple: instead of pressing tissue down like a massage, cupping uses gentle suction to lift tissue up. This reversal is what makes it so effective for the kinds of deep, stuck tension that hands alone cannot reach.

The cups draw stagnant blood and metabolic waste to the surface where your body can carry them away. Fresh, oxygenated blood rushes in behind them. Muscles release, fascia loosens, and areas that have been locked up for months or years finally let go.

"Where massage pushes tissue together, cupping gives it room to breathe."

Suction lifts the tissue

Cups create a gentle vacuum that pulls skin, muscle, and fascia upward. This separates stuck layers and opens space for blood and fluid to move.

Blood flow rushes in

Fresh, oxygenated blood floods the area the moment the cups lift stagnation. This accelerates repair and gives tissues the oxygen and nutrients they need to heal.

Tension finally lets go

Muscles unwind. Fascia releases. Areas that felt permanently tight find relief. Many patients say their first cupping session unlocks what months of other work could not.

Benefits

What cupping can do for you

Cupping is especially powerful for tension, circulation, and recovery. Below are the most common reasons patients come in for cupping, and what they often experience.

Deep Muscle Relief

Releases chronic tension in the back, neck, shoulders, and glutes.

Better Circulation

Boosts blood flow and lymphatic drainage to stagnant or stuck areas.

Faster Recovery

Speeds healing from sports injury, workout soreness, and overuse strain.

Stress Release

Calms the nervous system and releases tension stored from long-term stress.

Fascia Release

Loosens the connective tissue layer that hands and massage often cannot reach.

Respiratory Support

Helps clear congestion and ease chest tightness from colds, allergies, and asthma.

Reduced Inflammation

Calms localized inflammation and helps the body clear metabolic waste.

Deep Relaxation

Puts your body into rest-and-repair mode. Many patients fall asleep on the table.

Techniques

Three styles, one goal: release

Cupping is not one-size-fits-all. We choose the approach based on your body, your condition, and what it needs today. Often a single session blends two or more styles.

Stationary Cupping

Cups are placed on specific points and left in place for 5 to 15 minutes. Ideal for deep, localized tension, back pain, and respiratory support.

Most Common · Best for Deep Tension

Sliding Cupping

Cups are moved smoothly across an oiled area, producing a massage-like effect over broader regions. Excellent for full back relief and circulation.

Dynamic · Best for Broad Areas

Flash Cupping

Cups are placed, removed, and reapplied quickly in succession. Lighter, gentler, and produces minimal to no marks. Good for sensitive patients or first visits.

Gentle · Best for First Timers

About the Marks

Those circles are not bruises

They are a visible sign that the therapy is working.

You have probably seen the circles on Olympic swimmers, NBA players, and celebrities in red-carpet photos. Those circles are not injuries. They are called sha, and they happen when the suction draws stagnant blood and metabolic waste to the surface so your body can carry it away.

The color and intensity of the marks tell your practitioner how much stagnation was present in that area. Darker circles mean there was more tension and congestion. As you continue treatment and the area heals, the marks get lighter and lighter until they stop appearing at all.

  • They fade in 3 to 10 daysUsually a week, sometimes a few days less for lighter marks, sometimes a few days more for deeper ones.
  • They do not hurtUnlike actual bruises, the marks are not tender. You can press on them without pain. They are simply discoloration at the skin surface.
  • They get lighter each sessionAs your body heals and the stagnation clears, the marks become less pronounced and may stop appearing entirely.
  • If you cannot have marks, we have optionsTell us before your session. We can use flash cupping or lighter suction in visible areas if you have an event, photo shoot, or professional concern.

Cupping FAQ

Common questions, honest answers

The questions patients ask most before their first cupping session. If you have one we have not answered, call us or book a free consultation.

Still have questions?
(404) 728-8896
Does cupping hurt?
No. Cupping creates a firm, steady pulling sensation that most patients find deeply satisfying, not painful. Some describe it as the opposite of a sore spot being pressed on. If the pressure ever feels uncomfortable, we adjust or remove the cup immediately. Your comfort drives everything we do.
Are those circle marks bruises?
No, and unlike bruises they do not hurt. The circles are called sha, and they represent stagnant blood and metabolic waste that the suction drew to the surface so your body could clear them. They are discoloration, not tissue damage. They fade in 3 to 10 days and get lighter each session as your body clears the stagnation.
How long do the marks last?
Usually 3 to 10 days. Lighter marks may fade in just a few days. Deeper marks, which suggest more stagnation in the area, can take up to 10 days. As you continue treatment and the area heals, future marks get progressively lighter and may stop appearing altogether.
Can I avoid getting marks if I have an event or photo shoot?
Yes. Tell us before your session. We can use flash cupping, which is lighter and typically leaves minimal or no marks. We can also avoid highly visible areas or treat you in places your clothing will cover. Just let us know the situation and we will design your session around it.
How many sessions will I need?
It depends on your condition. Acute tension or soreness may resolve in one or two sessions. Chronic issues like long-term back pain typically benefit from a course of four to eight sessions, often spaced one to two weeks apart. Many patients find that monthly maintenance cupping keeps them feeling their best.
Is cupping the same as what I see athletes doing?
Yes, but with more care and precision. The cupping you see on professional athletes is the same traditional therapy, just photographed at the dramatic moment right after the session. When performed by a licensed practitioner, cupping is customized to your body, condition, and comfort level, not a one-size-fits-all approach.
What should I do after a cupping session?
Drink plenty of water to help your body clear what the cupping released. Keep the treated area warm and avoid cold wind or a cold shower for a few hours. Rest if you feel tired. Gentle movement the next day is great, but skip intense exercise for 24 hours.
Is anyone not a good candidate for cupping?
Cupping is not recommended over broken skin, active infections, or severe varicose veins. It may need to be modified or avoided for patients on blood thinners, those with bleeding disorders, pregnant patients in certain areas, and those with very fragile skin. We screen for all of this during your free consultation and recommend the safest approach.
