Chinese Tui Na

Therapeutic bodywork, not a spa massage

Traditional Chinese hands-on therapy that uses pressure, kneading, rolling, and stretching along the body's meridians. More focused and clinical than a regular massage, tui na treats specific conditions and works with the same energy pathways as acupuncture.

Over 40 Years of Experience · No Massage License Required · Licensed in Georgia
Is This Just Massage?

Tui Na is to massage what acupuncture is to a back rub

Both feel good. Both involve a skilled practitioner working on your body. But the goal, the methods, and the results are fundamentally different. Here is how they compare.

Spa Massage

Relaxation-focused

  • Primary goal is relaxation and stress relief
  • Works on muscles and surface tissue
  • Typically full-body, generalized
  • Oil, table, gentle music
  • Requires state massage license
  • Not a medical treatment
Chinese Tui Na

Treatment-focused

  • Treats specific medical conditions
  • Works on meridians, acu-points, and deep tissue
  • Targeted to the problem, often local
  • Clothed or draped, on table or mat
  • Practiced by licensed acupuncturists
  • A branch of traditional Chinese medicine
What Is Tui Na

The oldest hands-on therapy still practiced today

Tui Na, pronounced twee-nah, literally means "push-grasp" in Chinese. It is one of the four branches of traditional Chinese medicine, alongside acupuncture, herbal medicine, and dietary therapy. Practitioners have used it for more than two thousand years to treat a wide range of musculoskeletal and internal conditions.

Unlike massage, which mostly works on muscles and fascia, tui na works along the same meridians and energy channels that acupuncture treats. Your practitioner uses hands, elbows, and occasionally feet to apply precise pressure, kneading, rolling, and stretching to specific points. The goal is not just to relax you. It is to move stuck energy, free the affected meridian, and restore function to the system.

"Where massage helps your muscles remember how to rest, tui na helps your body remember how to heal."

Follows the meridians

Your practitioner works along the same channels acupuncture uses, applying pressure to specific acu-points to release blockages.

Treats the condition, not the area

Tui na is diagnostic. Each session addresses a specific issue, from frozen shoulder to digestion, not a generic back rub.

Works without needles

For patients who prefer non-needle therapy, tui na delivers many of the same benefits as acupuncture through hands alone.

Tui Na FAQ

Common questions, honest answers

The questions we hear most from patients new to tui na. If you have one we have not answered, call us or book a free consultation.

Still have questions?
(404) 728-8896
Is tui na just another name for massage?
No. While both use hands-on techniques, tui na is a branch of traditional Chinese medicine practiced for over two thousand years. It works along the meridians and acu-points used in acupuncture, and it treats specific medical conditions, not just general relaxation. A tui na practitioner is diagnosing and treating throughout the session, not performing a spa service.
Does tui na require a massage license?
No. Because tui na is a traditional Chinese medicine therapy rather than a Western massage modality, it is practiced by licensed acupuncturists under their acupuncture license. Your practitioner's clinical training includes extensive study of tui na alongside acupuncture and herbal medicine.
Does tui na hurt?
No. Tui na can range from gentle and relaxing to firm and focused, depending on your condition, but it should never hurt. Your practitioner calibrates the pressure to your comfort and adjusts any time you signal. Most patients find it deeply pleasant and often drift into a meditative state during treatment.
Will I have to undress?
No. Tui na is performed through loose clothing or a light draping sheet. You stay fully clothed throughout. This is one reason many patients prefer tui na to traditional massage, especially for a first visit or if they are uncomfortable with undressing for bodywork.
How is tui na different from acupuncture?
Tui na and acupuncture both work along the same meridians and acu-points, with the same goal of restoring balance and function. The difference is the tool. Acupuncture uses needles. Tui na uses hands. For some conditions needles are ideal. For others, hands-on work produces better results. Many patients combine both for the strongest effect.
Can tui na replace my massage?
For relaxation alone, no. Go to a spa for that. For specific conditions, pain, or medical concerns, tui na is far more targeted and effective. Many patients keep both in their routine, using massage for general stress relief and tui na for clinical issues.
How many sessions will I need?
It depends on your condition. Acute issues like a recent back strain may resolve in two or three sessions. Chronic conditions typically benefit from a course of six to twelve sessions, usually scheduled once or twice a week at first and then tapered. We discuss your specific plan at your free consultation.
Is tui na covered by insurance?
Coverage varies by carrier. Some insurance that covers acupuncture will also cover tui na when provided by a licensed acupuncturist. HSA and FSA cards are accepted. We offer free insurance benefit verification before your first visit so you know exactly what is covered.
